The molecular basis of sperm capacitation.

چکیده
Testicular sperm that have undergone spermatogeneis and spermiogenesis appear mature from a morphological standpoint but have acquired neither progressive motility nor the ability to fertilize a metaphase Il-arrested egg. In many species, progressive motility and fertilization competence are acquired during epididyma! transit, but complete fertilization capacity in vivo is only gained upon residence in the female reproductive tract for a finite period of time. The molecular and physiological events that confer on the sperm the ability to feftilize during residence in the female tract are collectively known as pacitation.” These maturational events can also be accomplished in vitro in defined media, the composition of which approximates the environment of the female reproductive tract. Although capacitation was discovered independently by Austin (1951, 1952) and Chang (1951, 1955) nearly one-half century ago, little is known to date about the molecular basis of this important event. This brief review will consider some of the recent findings made toward an understanding of capacitation using in vitro models. The purpose of this review is not to provide an exhaustive analysis of capacitation but is to offer an

Analysis of chaperone proteins associated with human spermatozoa during capacitation.
Mammalian spermatozoa must undergo a post-ejaculatory period of maturation, known as capacitation, before they can engage in the process of fertilization. Studies in the mouse have established that capacitation facilitates sperm-zona recognition via mechanisms that involve the appearance of tyrosine phosphorylated chaperone proteins on the sperm surface overlying the acrosome, the site of sperm...
متن کاملI-6: Role of Actin Cytoskeleton during Mouse Sperm Acrosomal Exocytosis
Background: Mammalian sperm must undergo a process termed capacitation to become competent to fertilize an egg. Capacitation renders the sperm competent by priming the cells to undergo a rapid exocytotic event called acrosomal exocytosis that is stimulated by the zona pellucida (ZP) of the egg or progesterone. Over the years, several biochemical events have been associated with the capacitation...
متن کاملRoles of Intracellular Cyclic AMP Signal Transduction in the Capacitation and Subsequent Hyperactivation of Mouse and Boar Spermatozoa
It is not until accomplishment of a variety of molecular changes during the transit through the female reproductive tract that mammalian spermatozoa are capable of exhibiting highly activated motility with asymmetric whiplash beating of the flagella (hyperactivation) and undergoing acrosomal exocytosis in the head (acrosome reaction). These molecular changes of the spermatozoa are collectively ...
متن کاملBiological basis for human capacitation.
More than 50 years ago Austin and Chang defined mammalian sperm capacitation as a period of time that sperm must reside in the female reproductive tract before they acquire the ability to fertilize oocytes. Since then numerous investigations have attempted to more clearly define the molecules and processes that are a part of capacitation. The data that have provided a more clear definition of c...

Among numerous other ailments, it is taken to treat male fertility problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of C...
